2009 Railcar Racing Entries
| Bumpin’ Contraption by Psychedelic Engineers | |
| La Carreta Diabolica by Los Guapos Diablos “After selling our souls for speed and glory, Los Guapos Diablos have joined in a dark union in the name of Victory. Channeling Nietzchean forces, we bring you our precisely engineered war wagon…La Carreta Diabolica, to evoke fear and amazement in the hearts of all. ¡Vive Los Guapos Diablos!” |
| Chop’s Inaugural Entry by Chop’s Teen Center The Chop’s Teen Center “steampunk” contraption was a collaborative effort between designer extraordinares and teen punksters! It is part traditional with its coal black patina and part rock star with copper, glitter and kinetic sculpture. All devices are recycled and all ideas are original. |
| Cyclotron by The South Pacific Coaster | |
| The Flying Quagmire by The Walnut Ct. Apprentices “Watching last years Regatta and the use of man powered machines prompted my partner and I to build a contraption. My partner, Bob Iorg, has worked with Hobart Brown on many of his machines in the past. Although we don’t have a theme yet, I’m sure between the two of us we will come up with a contraption worthy of this event.” — Daryl Scanagatta. A team of two, including Bob Iorg. |
| Hennepin Crawler by Krank-Boom-Clank The Crawler represents a desire to meld alternative transportation innovation, human-powered kinetic sculpture, recycling of disparate pieces of functional garbage, and the prankster’s notion of absurdity and bewilderment on an unsuspecting public. |
| Ironclad Surfer by Ironclad Surfers Powered by levered arm/freewheel bike gears attached to a surfboard that pumps up and down for smooth futuristic down the line action. |
| Methodical Juggernaut by Infernal Manufacturing “Our Day of Reckoning is Near! The contraption will confound and extinguish all doubters- Behold! Judgement! Embrace! Stupendous Splendor!” |
| MOG by Children’s Museum of Sonoma County Racing a modified version of last year’s contraption. |
| Murray the Fish by David Farish of Krank-Boom-Clank | |
| Rail Skinsby Nordic Traction | |
| Rock*N*Roll Sunday School Fixed Gear by The Strong Men of Santa Rosa These hearty moustachioed chaps plan to crush the competition in their hamster wheel of fiery fixed-gear ruination! Website. (Photos by Kristin Costill) |
| The Screaming Vortex by Escape Velocity Captained by last year’s Zephyr trophy winner, Andy Graham will be “…harnessing the power of the wind, the Screaming Vortex is the future of personal rail transport. Watch in awe as four crew members power two giant, counter-rotating turbine fans at screaming velocities, thrusting them not only to the finish line, but to the future itself.” — Andrew McIntosh Graham, 1867 Team members: Andy Graham, Alexis Bauer, Steven Muscarelli, & 4th TBA. |
| Shefield’s Fantastic Pump Trolley by Joel Allan & friends A scale replica of a handcar that would have been in use 100 years ago. |
| The Steam Bike Pilot Bret Gave from the Trek Store Santa Rosa: “Shot from an ethanol cannon, brought by his own devices & determined to win on someone else’s comes “THE MIDWESTERNER”. From a humble beginning in Rural Illinois this corn-feed man of men drove West with nothing more than his SUV and a will to win. The Midwesterner, aboard Todd Barricklow’s Regatta ‘08 Steam Bike is determined to turn “top 3” into top dog. Watch for the Midwesterner as he will be easily recognizable from his pasty corn-belt complexion, charming disposition and wholesome Midwestern values.” |
| Thenagain Bomber by Whiskeydrunk Cycles After somewhat (in their minds) conquering the rails of Santa Rosa with the cumbersome 2008’s “Tandemonium,” team members Klaus A Rappensperger, Neil Espenship, Joey Castor, & Joshua Thwaites decided to embark on a streamlined version of their previous machination with the pretext of beating the jodhpurs off the competition at the next Handcar Regatta. |
| Toad in the Stew by Brothers of Benedict Joseph Labre Hobo collective to roll their steel hog through Santa Rosa: Kid Skid, Nedder Weevil, Stewball, Clown and De-lay. |
