Presenting 2011 Handcar Regatta Racers
Team Name: Steampunk Donovan
Contraption Name: The Time Machine
More photographs
Description: The first railcar showcase comes to you from the depths of time. Inspired by the 1960s movie The Time Machine, the Time Machine railcar took four months to build. Take a good look at the detail of this fine machine, from the zodiac wheel to the glass jars on the front.
Team Name: Neverwas Haul Crew
Contraption Name: The Parlor Car
More Photographs
Description: 1895 car of the future. Winner: Pierre Shelmersheim. “One feels that this kind projectile or catapult, fashioned to cleave the air, is quite ready and able to devour space.” We do not have the body on our car as yet. But we will enjoy the comfort and refinement yet to come in befitting victorian clothing. Winner of the Golden Dinosaur Award in the Kinetic Grand Championship. Did not break down at Burning Man 2011. We believe competition in the HandCar Regatta will make the Parlor Car the first vehicle to complete all three events: The Kinetic Triple Crown, in the same year.
Team Name: Black Butte
Contraption Name: Bindle Stiff Express
Description: The Bindlestiff express, a six-person railbike, was built in 1988 and has seen action on many lines in Northern California. We extensively rebuilt it in 2008-9 under the direction of the original builder. We participated in the Regatta last year, logging the fastest run of the day. We received the “Nimble sleight of hand” award after being disqualified for running with too many people. This time we promise to keep it to 4 riders for all timed trials – and we’ll be there to have fun, we ain’t worried about speed or the competition.- Team Name: Just Married
Contraption Name: Handcar Honeymoon
Description: Classic handcar yellow one from last year, not the 1880.

More Photographs
Description: Weighing in at 800 pounds without a rider, the “U.A.” is amphibious contraption capable of river, rail, and road travel. Going nowhere fast, the U.A. can be seen at events and parades, or by appointment or invite.
Team Name: International LandBuoy Project
Contraption Name: El Chupacabra- Team Name: The Never Schoolers
Contraption Name: Checkered Quad - Team Name: Walnut Court Apprentices
Contraption Name: Kryptonite Kruiser 2 - Team Name: Fred and Wilma
Contraption Name: Rock Rod
Description: Team leader Stephen Delaire (aka “Fred”) is a veteran contraption builder who has raced streamlined human powered vehicles and competed in the Arcata-Eureka kinetic sculpture races. The rock rod moves away from Steve’s typical fast, racing vehicles of the past. The Rock Rod is slow but designed for all terrain including rails, sand, and water. The theme brings us back to the nostalgia of an ideal imaginary world… a time when modern ideas were brought back to the stone age.
