Kindred Hackers Part 9: Team Sand Reckoner

We Regatteans are ever vigilant for all things kinetic around the globe. Recently, a group of delirious devisors have surfaced out of Philadelphia, PA, and are set to launch their latest unruly contraption known rather ominously as:

The Sand Reckoner

They crew have been diligently documenting their construction days and nights, displaying that certain crackpot craftsmanship we love in kinetic sculpture devotees.

Also true to maker form is their DIY approach to events, parties, and general rousing fun in creating their own community of like-minded participants. Witness:

  • Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby
A good old-fashioned street derby of human-powered contraptions
  •  The Philadelphia Experiment
An events umbrella organization of sorts fraught with fabulous parties
  • And what looks to be a terribly exciting event:
    PEX Summer Festival
“We will be uniting for three days and nights of amazing music, art, education, dance, participatory shared experience and conscious connection on 200 acres of private land, just one hour south of Philadelphia.”

Partake of the following moving picture electro-luminescent display of the derby:

We wish Team Sand Reckoner many excellent voyages plus the stellar events and parties among fearless doers who spin the wheels of an emerging maker culture! Huzzah!

Kindred Hackers, Part 3: MAKE Magazine Joins The Handcar Regatta

Make: Magazine -- CraftThe recent reigning monarchs of the Hacker / Doer / Artist movement combining arts, technology, modification, and good old-fashioned fun is found in the rising star called MAKE Magazine and their sister publication, Craft. Both are headquartered just next door to winsome Santa Rosa in Sebastopol, CA.

Knowing a kindred spirit when they see one, the goodly folks at MAKE have decided to join our illustrious cause to rouse and stimulate the Northern California populous with a copious dosage of ARTISTIC AND MECHANICAL WONDERS! Let us call it “Play-ticipation!”

MAKE: Fire TruckPlans are to bring their modified MAKE: Fire Truck, originally acquired from the stately continent of Europe. In addition, demonstrations of multifarious projects and contraptions are to be displayed for the tutelage of our fair youth and the enlightenment of all generations.

The Handcar Regatta is set to shatter the shackles of humdrum human perspectives and nurture the tender germination of creation for both young and old. Those who would abandon The Great Handcar Regatta are base charlatans and unfit for the modern-today!
